when i owned a car, it was just an immense puzzling maintenance hassle, and I hated driving. in north america of course I admit it‘s a necessity.
The complexity is getting worse and with it the repair hassles. Mostly NOT related to emissions or safety equipment. A driver's mirror might be connected to a half dozen electronic modules, each of which can fail. Compare to my 1990 Mercedes with a manual driver's mirror.
