I received all my knowledge of the classics (admittedly not much) in the English language. Why study Greek and Latin?

It’s fine to read in translation. But, the point of scholarship in these areas (and ideally anyway, undergraduates are aspiring scholars) is to work directly in those languages that the people we are studying wrote in.
