I found it odd, that the plot turns primarily on the imponderables of losing one's nerve. The Cougar person, in the beginning, sees a Russian plane and loses his nerve. Later on the Goose thing happens and Cruise loses his nerve.
I think this was the American brand in late XX century - male that is toxic and also bitchy. Tom Cruise is probably the best example and was the most popular actor in that period
