      I would think maybe this is a way to kneecap a big industrial competitor, but not much USA manufacturing left to compete with

      US has various geopolitical goals that Greens further: Right now keeping Russia away from Germany and out of Europe (the Greens oppose Nordstream 2), otherwise keeping Germany's borders open and industry hobbled (the latter a post WWII goal of American Euro policy)

      I understand the anti-Russian stuff, absent US/UK pressure there would be closer relationship between the two, same with open borders(benefits big biz, helps to deracinate), but who benefits from DE de-industrialization, besides China? Can't imagine this is done to benefit Ford

      reducing Germany's economic (& political) dominance is believed to be an important aspect of maintaining peaceful relations within Europe and keeping the door open there to American influence (via NATO etc)
