He puts out the eyes of the patriarch, who had crowned Leontius. He institutes a reign of terror. He sends a fleet to Cherson, where he had initially been exiled, to deal death and destruction to his enemies there too.

Alas, there are new military mutinies. In the end most of Justinian's supporters abandon him. He and his son are killed. The year is AD 711. This is the end of the Heraclian dynasty, and the end of our political history.

Will conclude with some imperial portraits. Here's Constantine IV, from a mosaic in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare (Ravenna).pic.twitter.com/aFOo43PS5c

Next thred will be about Monophysites. Why anyone care, were they just eastern 'nationalists,' did they overlap with the Green football hooligans, what about the theology tho, etc After then I promise we get to conspiracies.

It's interesting how despite Arab raids Anatolia remained a cohesive core of Byzantine territory even as other domains dwindled to scattered ports and coastal regions. Haldon suggests the climatic contrast between Anatolia and areas south was critical in repelling Arab settlement

You also had the themes primarily in Anatolia, i.e. the armies had carved up the territory among them and permanently settled there. Hard to know if that‘s a cause of Anatolia‘s endurance as Byzantine territory, or a consequence of it ...

I've read there's been controversy regarding the themes, when they arose, etc. it seems like you take a relatively traditional view on them, is that a fair read? Always felt like they helped mark transition from late antique to medieval world.

Yeah, the 7th-century sources are fairly thin & unclear, so the details of the themes & their early history is unclear. Whenever they arose, they‘re clearly characteristic of medieval period, the vanishing of civilian administrative roles in favour of military ones.
