The least sinister reading, is that a decentralised spontaneous consensus among elites emerged as the result of a preference cascade in mid-March 2020, according to which Corona is super dangerous and can only be stopped by mass containment (lockdowns & test/trace).
Now that many elites bear responsibility for overestimating the threat of Corona (& overestimating the efficacy of lockdowns), they experience cognitive dissonance, adhering ever more strongly to their prior failed positions, marginalising dissenting voices, etc
But why has this discussion been marginalized and why isn't there a single famous person advocating for our rights? Why has every public figure gone silent or fallen in step with this failed government response to a mild virus?
as @based_patrol says, the cathedral basically. and, elite consensus on certain crucial pressure points is highly controlled and generally uniform. or whatever reason, (many theories possible!) this is one of them - there are other issues too of course.
