Thus leftists always claimed to worry about things like equality, freedom, fairness. This gained them entry to liberal political institutions, altho their agenda was in every case inimical to the liberal ideals and things like 'equality' have very difft meaning for the left.
Now that leftists are politically dominant they find it convenient to drop those aspects of their agenda that might require them to cede advantage. Basically leftism is an ideological virus optimised to infect liberal institutions; beyond that it has very little content

Interesting, that phenomenon you describe could be considered the leftist version of how marxists describe fascism: the naked and brutal takeover of power by the bourgeoisie when liberal democracy does not serve them anymore.
