I am referring to national borders and social borders.
Humans are territorial creatures, much like chimpanzees in this regard. And so they will always gather into tribalistic groups, and seek out and defend specific territories. Politics are merely the system we have for managing these instincts.

Don't you allow for the possibility that progress will help us overcome those instincts or at least better control them? I am very aware of mass psychology and see it on display in the financial markets every day but I still believe that we can progress beyond that stage.

No, we are at base animals and bound to nature as all animals are. Nor should we want to change these fundamental aspects of ourselves, which are part of being human.
