Just look at all the insane stuff the media reports now every day. SZ: “In the middle of the Corona pandemic, the rate of sick leave among employees and sunk to a record low”. Ordinary people I guess are expected to read this and see no contradictions, question nothing.pic.twitter.com/loKtp4G51A

(How are we in the middle of a pandemic if nobody is sick. I mean how does that work according to any reasonable definition of the term.)

Laid off employees can't take sick leave. Those left need to justify their work on a pure cost basis = more likely to just work through it, especially if at home Majority being forced to WFH/not at all = less likely the usual bugs hit critical mass, which most sick days are for.

Acute respiratory infections (black line: 2021) are at or near a four-year low in Germany.pic.twitter.com/oeTMIsDk8y

It's pretty much the same here in Australia; common cold basically evaporated here because of mask mandate and (over)zealous use of hand sanitiser. Along with less physical movement of people on transport and less people at work, this all folds in without contradiction.

If people have historically low average rates of illness it’s not a pandemic. As for measures: Rhinoviruses unaffected by measures in Germany. Other human Coronaviruses (hCoV) had a later-than-usual season but still around. RSV & hMPV gone, but those mainly infect kids.pic.twitter.com/5XFewrlD1V

Alright, this is compelling stuff. Seeing how well this would map onto periods of lockdown or not would be the next real step, as my very cursory Wikipedia search tells me our German friends are not the most compliant for this (to their credit!) Red flu seems to model that curve.

Lockdowns don’t seem to have any effect on rhinovirus (light blue); what you see with the dip after Christmas and the rise in March/April is the ordinary dual Fall-Spring season that Rhinoviruses have. The red is actually non-SARS human Coronaviruses. We know of 4 different ...

...such hCovs, obviously, and they have a complex interplay, with a different one typically leading every year as human immunity builds in response to prior waves & then decays. The late-season rise is maybe down to reduced immunity after a year of measures, but is hard to say.

The thing that stands out to me about graph, is that it challenges normie assumption that covid is just "superflu": that it operates and spreads along the same default assumptions as usual colds and flus. Why does orange not explode when red does if it is more contagious? Fun fun

Something about the transmission is obviously not well understood.
