All restrictions could end this moment, with no adverse effect. What is more, people in power know this and they end nothing. From now until they are replaced, our leaders will impose every restriction that they can. They will never stop, until they are made to.

While I want this to be true, I also want examples and evidence. I am cynical enough to believe everything bad said about the 0.01% elites, but there is no clear smoking gun. They are incompetent and vain, but its not clear how intentional this all is.

Right now the only plausible explanations for their conduct lie on a spectrum from face-saving doubling down on failed policies so nobody realises they screwed up (most benign end) to some kind of revolution-of-the-elites scenario (at the most sinister end)
