Tbh, I encountered that in german academia as well.

yeah, it’s here in DE too, but it’s so much worse there. an order of magnitude maybe, really bad.

I left academia after one of my professors downright refused to write a formal letter of recommendation b/c I would have received a scholarship she wanted her favorite grad student to have. Don’t know why, but this was just so openly unfair & materialistic. Really shocked me.

Your prof was obviously an idiot. What you do in that case, is write letters for everyone who asks, but make it clear by not-so-subtle clues in the letters, which of your recomendees (?) you prefer.
