When I first started as an assistant prof, most of my colleagues were sane. Years later, after they tenured me, most of the older guard had retired and been replaced by raving dangerous lunatics with disturbing hair.

I suspect they're as woke or worse, actually, though some of them may be at a slight lag. But as you go down the pole working conditions tend to get worse too. You get paid less, have to teach a lot more, etc.

Is there any serious scholarship happening outside of university systems? Any signs of incipient non-university models?
-
I think this depends enormously on the field. There are in the social sciences and humanities things like research foundations and various institutes, that function parallel to universities.

The question of why these people are so effective at taking over institutions when they are less competent and likeable than those they push out has been bugging me lately. Do you think you have any insight on this? Do you think academia was uniquely vulnerable?
-
Big topic, but in a nutshell, I think the left-progressive reigning ideology has been selected for securing & maintaining control of institutions. Beyond that there is very little content to it. All the primary tenets are about securing this kind of dominance.
