There is a guy who is lauded as an éminence grise in my area who has not published very much, but goes around giving talks and impressing audiences. he seems well read. Every now and then he writes me with an odd, specific question about this thing I work on. No explanation.

So I answer. A few months later, another question. And so on. This has been going on for years now. It took me a long time to realise he's doing this with like 20 or 30 different guys and this is the substance of all the talks he gives.

On the one hand, I don’t care about being cited or recognised or any fake garbage like that But, I don’t like people who pretend to be experts, or who contribute to the cult of ‘expertise’. When it is via deception like this, I like it least of all
