Great thread! IMO this all happens without any concerted effort or malice. A series of well-meaning, but ultimately imperfect, people can produce this mess given the right incentives and lack of hard external correction.
The mirrors my experience in developing world. Archeology Profs boast about stuff but don’t seem to understand the basics. The work they boast about was done by Americans in the 40-60s or recent international teams. Yet they drastically over price everything and don’t deliver.
So I am thinking, They have to put some local in those positions and send them to Harvard and Oxford for summer schools. But they don’ts care that much. It’s just money and status.
Oh yeah. I once met a postdoc. She made her PhD on very specific topic. Early in my thesis, I disproved her findings.She wanted to be smart and something that makes her findings *impressive*.She has now to publish for the rest of her life under this small mistake.She knows I know
