Yes it was like that, but also with some of Nabokov’s Pnin, yet vastly more pessimistic & somehow even more provincial. And on top of it all, the sexual minorities & the racism hoaxes & the political insensitivity committees and just the stupidity, so stupid, everything so dumb.
You'd hope that foreign academia, especially that outside the American sphere (Russia, China) are doing better than America's so that we have something else to go off of lol.
I left academia after one of my professors downright refused to write a formal letter of recommendation b/c I would have received a scholarship she wanted her favorite grad student to have. Don’t know why, but this was just so openly unfair & materialistic. Really shocked me.
Your prof was obviously an idiot. What you do in that case, is write letters for everyone who asks, but make it clear by not-so-subtle clues in the letters, which of your recomendees (?) you prefer.
