My wife's Latin professors were notable by their lack of fluency and superabundance of nitpicking analysis.
Pedantry is often a cover for incompetence, I think.

I once disagreed with professor’s use of literary “theory”, like all the “discourse” bullshit from Foucault. I disagreed to her face. All she could say was: “Well, that’s your discourse.” WTF. These people should be in an insane asylum. Just one of many stories. It’s all shit.
I agree, it’s impossible to overstate just how bad of a shithole it is, with illiterate professors peddling ideology, parasitic on the “elite” reputation of colleges that were once home to the best scholars. Philip Rieff diagnosed the rot in his book, “Fellow Teachers.” No hope.
