      I haven't been following the online controversy over this but this lady and eigen aren't recognized as German in Germany by others; it's only a pretense they can keep up online to Americans who don't know this. Or is this not correct @eugyppius1 @Progrockfarmer

      On the other hand, using this as an explanation of behavior in Germany would often be a gaffe, not a smoothing over of things. It's an Americanism. OP and various German commenters probably feel they understand #culture because they understand American English. Not necessarily.

          I have around 1,000 extended family members in Germany, some going on their 4th generation now. None consider themselves German, and more importantly, no Germans consider them German.
