I haven't been following the online controversy over this but this lady and eigen aren't recognized as German in Germany by others; it's only a pretense they can keep up online to Americans who don't know this. Or is this not correct

Equally absurd is her OP claim of "it is a rather strange idea to think of it as some sort of ethnicity/heritage". Ethnic Germans even far into the Green voting base won't go along with this.

You can test for this using Merkel's quote "Das Volk ist jeder, der in diesem Land lebt" (2017) which substitutes 'Volk' for 'Bevölkerung' and razes the distinction between the German people and the populace.
