States have constructed Corona to be an insoluble problem, against which they propose only the most destructive, protracted solutions, with unflagging determination. Either they must surrender to the virus, destroy our whole way of life, or be driven from power.

"must surrender to the virus". This is the issue with lockdown. when something like a terrorist attack happens, responding with fear and the sacrificing of normal life is generally seen as cowardly and "letting the enemy win"...

Yet with Covid the response is turned upside down: timidity and the sacrificing of our lives, even for months and years, has somehow become a patriotic duty, something that we should commit to with pride and solidarity. It's a very stark difference.

yes exactly. the rhetoric is backwards. hiding under the bed isn‘t patriotic or brave, it‘s ridiculous.
