Mean dogs are an under appreciated problem for Americans trying to run/walk/bike, especially in exurban and rural areas where many owners let them just run around. Regular runners/bikers often carry pepper spray for this reason.
yes, as runner I carried pepper spray (& used it regularly). got into a few shouting matches over it too. undeniably distance runners in US are fitter for facing harder obstacles, training on highways etc., than their Euro counterparts. I was at my fittest running in US
