half of it was insane American academia, an order of magnitude (or two) more worse than D. the other half equal parts car culture (as Canadian OP will be fine with this tho), in my uni days crime in the big cities, then as a prof 5-month winter in inland northeast. also mean dogs

Mean dogs are an under appreciated problem for Americans trying to run/walk/bike, especially in exurban and rural areas where many owners let them just run around. Regular runners/bikers often carry pepper spray for this reason.

yes, as runner I carried pepper spray (& used it regularly). got into a few shouting matches over it too. undeniably distance runners in US are fitter for facing harder obstacles, training on highways etc., than their Euro counterparts. I was at my fittest running in US
