I might add: The relentless lack of imagination and the nearly religious commitment to failed tactics by commanders at the front, their refusal to consider new strategies or take any criticism. The insane and deceptive complicity of the press, which forestalls all critique.https://twitter.com/eugyppius1/status/1378412103149756416 …

1. Harsh lockdowns together with total closure of borders is the only clean approach to combat a new virus 2. it worked in APAC when it was applied appropriately 3. It was never done right in Europe, so it never worked 4. Thus you are right for Europe, a way out/forward is needed

Before 2020: Containment, as strategy, was considered appropriate only for localised outbreaks with very few infections. „Lockdowns“ were absolute & had duration of a few weeks „Mass containment“ is the innovation we had in 2020, and it has failed against a widely seeded virus

ASEAN countries as well as e.g. HK had mass containment during the original SARS. You had tracking and containment of whole parts of cities/countries to combat Dengue Fever in SEA anytime before. COVID-19 is basically transferring this experience to the world as a role model.

No, they had local, targeted containment (the equivalent of the Italian ‚red zones‘ in late February in 2003, but not *mass* containment at the level of nations. That was a Corona innovation.
