One explanation for the irrational drive to close pubs always first of all: Don’t want too many people selected for their lack of anxiety over Corona to exchange too many ideas among themselveshttps://twitter.com/eugyppius1/status/1376449486566866953 …

no they don't. They all go there with their friends and only talk among themselves. I've been there. I've scanned the whole place & there's never a solitary soul drinking alone.

There's enough social lubrication that you can talk to other people, but no one is going to talk to you first.

not really sure what your argument is. closing pubs is a measure that limits unmediated socialisation opportunities among people (whether friends, work colleagues, or strangers).

and there is perhaps a cultural difference here. in German beer gardens & pubs you‘re often seated next to strangers, and i‘ve had many political conversations in this context.

well, this is how you can tell I don't have any friends, because the way I see it inviting someone to your house is about as difficult as asking them out for drinks and if you're looking for "selection effects," you're not exactly going to find an intellectual bunch at the bar

Inviting people to your home (also subject to heavy restrictions in Germany) is more intimate; bars & restaurants are an intermediate space suitable for work colleagues and casual acquaintances. Also in Germany, pubs & beer gardens are a near cultural universal.

this is definitely a cultural difference. there's camaraderie between strangers there from what I understand. I figured you were another mildly-introverted american undergraduate, my mistake.
