Indeed, the mechanism isn't clear, but influenza transmission is complex and poorly understood. Something has disturbed its ecology somehow. It's the only explanation for why flu is absent even in places without any Corona restrictions
almost everywhere, the March 2020 Corona spike corresponded with a precipitous, unusual drop in influenza cases, despite in many places increased flu testing (physicians trying to confirm Corona infections by elimination, when Corona PCR tests were still hard to come by)
