Normal people used to have homesteads and family businesses. Eventually, it became normal to be "employed," a condition formerly reserved to slaves, sailors, East India Company employees and other similar wretches.

Serfs had homesteads of their own. There was, of course, a dispossessed underclass, just as there is today. Modern medicine and sanitation aside, it's unclear which is/was worse to be a part of.

While modern industrialisation has made it possible to sustain much larger populations than in the past, and vastly expanded the numbers of people we would consider to have comfortable lives, it's unclear whether the impoverished and immiserated are any fewer or better off.
