it’s interesting how hand sanitiser never really took off as liturgical act to ward off disease in the way that face masks did.

They did in Brazil. It was disgusting when you'd shake people hands afterwards because I'm sure the stuff people ended up buying was cheap knock off stuff
interesting. I spent part of the summer in Switzerland, and I noticed it was largely used in place of masks, i.e. stores would have mandatory hand sanitiser but no mask requirement

I think in brazil it served as a sort of extra thing that made everyone feel alright about dancing and getting together. No way you can stop Brazilians from getting together although I hear now with the rise in cases the state is doing it's best.
