Even before the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve had a massive shortage of doctors due to the American Medical Association lobbying Congress for years to limit residency training spots. Now California is even calling upon dentists to join the fight treating coronavirus patients.

Much more worrisome than the shortage of PPE, medications, or even ventilators is the shortage of healthcare professionals during a pandemic. Our graduate medical education system is completely broken. It benefits the few at the expense of the many—ultimately abusing patients.

Established doctors have benefitted from the limited supply of physicians because it increases our compensation and influence. So you rarely if ever hear doctors complaining about the physician shortage. But we swore an oath to put the patients’ interest above our own. Follow it.

Our dentists aren't allowed to work, so if they were any help here, that would be ok

Why would AMA want to limit residency spots?

Which brings up a point. I assume veterinary hospitals have been queried as to whether their ventilators are usable on humans. It wouldn't be the first time in history that animal medicine and rights are belatedly extended to our own species. ref: child cruelty laws.
