The ACE2 protein may be an effective treatment for the coronavirus by competing with the ACE2 receptor binding sites in our lungs, kidneys, and intestines that the coronavirus targets to gain entry into our cells. Genetically engineered yeast can produce ACE2 in large quantities.

Yeast also have clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) from prior infections from bacteriophages. Using a Cas9 nuclease to create a double-stranded break in the yeast’s DNA at CRISPR sites, we can insert the ACE2 gene through homologous recombination.

It takes many attempts to get it right, especially if the yeast does non-homologous end joining which can destroy the modified gene. But once you have a successful run, yeast reproduces exponentially in huge vats which is how Big Pharma makes insulin yet sells it for high prices.

I know this all sounds complicated for those who haven’t studied it. But it’s actually fairly simple and the technology has been around for several years. Someday we need to teach this in high school and let students make their own genetically modified yeast in biology class.

And yes, it would be pretty ironic if the coronavirus can be treated or cured using the same species of yeast that also makes Corona beer.

I have a friend who did his PhD studies on utilizing yeast to help identify cancer types.. quite valid vehicle to help... Faster than auger growth, I'm assuming?

Or.. I forget what the blood base is called to help with studying growth...

In the above you seem to suggest that novel corona virus attacks the lungs and kidneys. I am surprised about mention of the kidneys. Do other forms of the corona virus also attack the kidneys? Is this why novel corona virus is so concerning?
-
I looked at the Wikipedia page and I doesn’t mention anything about the kidneys. Also, what makes this virus so much more dangerous than the common cold?
