    I strongly condemn the coup carried out by the military and call for the immediate release of those detained. Election results and constitution must be respected. Myanmar's people want democracy. The EU stands with them.

    I deplore widespread detentions and disproportionate use of force against protesters and journalists in again today. People must be able to exercise their right to demonstrate without fear of repression. Russia needs to comply with its international commitments.

    Caning is cruel, degrading and contrary to human dignity. The EU calls on Indonesia to honour its international obligations under the Convention Against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, ratified by Indonesia in 1998.
