Why do holes in Antarctic sea ice appear in the Weddell Sea in some years but not others, and what happens inside them? My coauthors and I tackle this decades-old mystery in a new paper in ... (1/6)

If Dr. Seuss had written a book about banning cars.

This is the first of three pages of a satirical book written by me in the style of Dr. Seuss. It contains too much text for this image description but I will write it out in the thread below.

This is fun. Thanks . Maybe the next geophysical index used to lure leisure travelers to Alaska could be sea ice extent. For every 1σ negative anomaly from climatology, you get an additional 10% off flights north of the Arctic circle. Check out the ice before it's gone!

It’s grad application season and I see a lot of “I would never take a student who didn’t contact me!” comments. A reminder that there are a lot of first-gen students out there who might not know that this is a thing and they deserve a shot at discussing their interests w/ you.

Worth remembering that Stephen’s very first Times op-ed, published over two years ago, also requires a “science correction” that any sci editor worth their salt would have caught (not to mention being just plain bad all around!)

The top comments on this great piece are disheartening. Why is it so hard to grasp that a lack of diversity leads to a workplace culture in which scientists from underrepresented groups feel less welcome? And no, academia is not a meritocracy. 🤯

If you're curious why trees are the subject of a quasi-rally at the land use committee, a brief primer: Trees are a rallying cry for anti-density activists, who argue that they are good for the environment while dense housing is bad.

It's a bad-faith argument to say that trees clean the environment and therefore we must prevent development. Allowing development would prevent far more emissions than a big tree next to someone's two-car garage will ever "clean" after the fact.

Science and scientists are not neutral but we can leverage our power in solidarity with communities on the frontlines of fighting climate change (and the corporations & groups causing it).

the "social deficits" are all on the neurotypical side, on Greta's opponents and critics, who use misogyny, ableism, and ageism against her. They lie for a living, deceiving millions of fellow neurotypicals in the process. [6/7]
