Polio vaccine Cloning In vitro fertilisation Henrietta's "immortal" cells made these possible. But did you know her cells were taken from her cervix & used extensively WITHOUT her permission? I highlight the woman behind these cells. Full vid & subscribe:

This is very timely. Today I start teaching a module on Cellular Biotechnology and will be including aspects of social justice issues. The use of Henrietta Lack’s cells HeLa cells without her consent will be a key example discussed

I will be 90 and STILL talking about how nuts it was that in my college level microbiology class, while the use of immortal cell lines for vaccine development was extensively (!!!) discussed my (black) professor did not mention Ms.Lacks. Not ONCE. Higher education smh

So much to glean from the ultra important story of Mrs. Lacks. Spent time with my scholars discussing the the scientific impact of HeLa cells, bioethics and most importantly who she was as a person.

was NEVER compensated for her contributions to science, and she NEVER gave consent to her biological matter being used for research. EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD KNOW HER NAME. Thank you, Henrietta. And ❤️

Warning: Flashing colors This week in my DM’s I’ve gotten things like: “All chemicals are bad” “We should only eat natural products” “ All GMOs are bad for you” While it’s not bad to eat natural stuff, this is also something that should be debunked *cue TikTok

If you don’t know the story behind the HeLa cells and Henrietta Lacks, I encourage you to learn her story. Her story is another example of the mistreatment and implicit bias towards Black patients that is prevalent in healthcare today.

Fact: Henrietta was buried in an unmarked grave in 1951. 59 years later Dr Roland Pattillo read “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and decided to donate a headstone for her grave.

The most mind blowing statement I've ever heard in my career in came during a discussion about Henrietta Lacks and sharing her story "Yeah but it's not really science communication is it?" From a professional science communicator. I was dumbfounded and so disappointed
