    This 19th century knitting pattern for a was found tucked inside a household book belonging to Mary Anne Cotton Sheppard. We wonder if she ever got around to making it?

    We think this greeting card provides a beautiful example of lace for , with the delicate lace hiding a colourful surprise underneath.

    Not the normal green acid-free cardboard boxes we are used to seeing documents stored in! This lovely wooden box (origins unknown) came up to the Searchroom yesterday holding a survey of Castle Hedingham by Israel Amyce esq.

    We thought about sharing this for yesterday, but we don’t think the simple term ‘handwriting’ does justice to these stunning examples of ornamental penmanship! The credit for these artworks goes to George Edwards Drayton,of Bocking Academy 1847/1848.

    Charles Dickens’ newspaper, The Daily News, was first printed in 1846. This reprint of an article from July 2nd 1846 describes the newspaper as “a new daily paper of high character”.
