Anyway, this book is important if you want to understand the housing crisis facing our cities. Which isn’t really a housing crisis but a housing-jobs-and-transit crisis, and has to be understood as a unified whole. Worth reading. And now I don’t have to write it myself!

He also introduces median rent-to-income ratio as a measure of housing affordability. Then explains the puzzle: see people move from low ratio to high ratio cities much more often than reverse. It felt like we were missing the follow-up: what’s a better measure?

Doctors can be pretty much guaranteed that if there are a lot of jobs nearby, some of those will be doctor jobs. But programmers, actors, etc cannot be because those industries are not prevalent in every city. I’d love to see the result of integrating this fact into the math.

One issue w the books approach is treating the labor market as mostly homogenous as a simplifying assumption. We evaluate liquidity by counting the number of jobs nearby. But actually the number of relevant jobs is a small fraction of that, and not evenly distributed.

Often I feel discussions on city planning policy come down to the wrenchists vs the hammerists. “How can you possibly want to use a hammer for this problem? Obviously a wrench is the only way to go.” Alain wants to open the whole toolbox.

One of my favorite parts is diving into the trade-offs between cars, motorcycles, bicycles, buses, subways. What’s special about Alain’s style here is that he helps you see what’s great about each, and also the weaknesses. An engineer’s approach, excited about each new tool.

The very short version: Cities are labor markets, where the value of housing is driven by the number of jobs within a commutable radius. Packed into that statement are a huge number of complexities and implications, which require unpacking.

I just finished Order Without Design by Alain Bertaud https://www.amazon.com/Order-without-Design-Markets-Cities/dp/0262038765/ref=nodl_ …. If you care about the nuts and bolts of creating functional cities that actually serve the poor as well as the wealthy, this book is a must read. Clear eyed, well researched, and engagingly written.

Amazon famously uses the “PR/FAQ” process (https://medium.com/pminsider/press-releases-for-product-managers-everything-you-need-to-know-942485961e31 … ) to propose getting people and money to build new products. Other formats: startups raise with pitch decks. I’ve heard Apple uses full-fidelity demos. What do you use in your org?

Also, thanks so much to
@CohhCarnage for the assist. Fun fact: due to time constraints for practicing on the TED stage, we did the first full demo was during the actual performance. I had no fear: the amazing Twitch event engineering team was on the case.Prikaži ovu nitHvala. Twitter će to iskoristiti za poboljšanje vaše vremenske crte. PoništiPoništi -
I gave a talk about gaming, media, and community. We've come a long way with live streaming, but the opportunity to connect people is so much bigger. Twitch realizes only a small portion of what could be done.https://www.ted.com/talks/emmett_shear_what_streaming_means_for_the_future_of_entertainment?language=en …

When the city you live in gets you down, dig in and do something about it. The attitude of “I’m just here to get mine and then I can leave” is *why* we can’t solve our problems. We, the people of SF, are the cavalry, and there’s no one else coming over the hill to help.

If someone is worth their weight in gold, on average they’re worth around $2-4MM. So quite a lot of people are probably worth their weight in gold over the course of their career.
