New preprint! Network analysis in a big sample of children shows that socio-economic status impacts EVERYTHING: education, cognition, mental health, and attitude. Twittering co-authors: , , , and . Link:

Do NOT read this if you dislike vicarious embarrassment, or have something important to do in the next half hour. Thread is full of amazing cringe stories from academia!

I’ll be live on BBC Cambridgeshire show tonight (re-broadcast on Radio National ABC Australia tomorrow) answering public questions about the brain, including why we don’t diagnose mental heath disorders with an MRI &more.

This nonsense makes my head hurt. The EU *helped* unleash the potential of our scientists, engineers and world-leading universities through freedom of movement, unfettered collaboration and generous funding. You are about to put us *back* on the leash by taking all that away.

Agree with the whole thread, but especially this one. Same stuff pops up when exporting Jupyter notebooks to PDF, or writing LaTex. Call me a dumb dinosaur, but I prefer simpler things like Markdown for short things, or LibreOffice for more involved writing.

This was great! High-level theoretical account supported by impressive amount of data. Highlight for me: Theory that underweighting perceptual priors is followed by compensatory overweighting of cognitive priors, and that this could be a basis for psychosis. Thanks !

Imagine being accepted in a good US university, going through months long vetting process to get a visa, hoping to join your wife in America, then humiliated upon arrival in LA airport, dreams crushed, sent back. Your crime? Born Iranian.

Now here's a thought: Can we have an 'archived data' badge instead of open data? Not all data can / should be open, but metadata / data sharing agreements / running analyses on request / scrambled features are just some of the ways in which archived, closed data can be useful

More generally, there’s a cost to being poor. Buying necessary things on credit is more expensive than buying them outright, and having to rent them is even worse. Alternatives (e.g. laundromat) cost valuable time. Unfairly, this makes poor families less able to escape poverty.
