BepiColombo has successfully performed its first and final flyby of Earth, setting it on course for its next two gravity assists at Venus, and finally its destination planet, Mercury. “The speed at which #BepiColombo orbits the Sun is much slower after the swingby” – Michael Khan, ESA Head of Mission Analysis “The swingby robs BepiColombo's orbit of a lot of energy, without firing its engines or even using much fuel, only clever use of the laws of physics”pic.twitter.com/gvezNeXi3s

Soon after #BepiColombo's closest approach, the spacecraft fell into Earth's shadow. No longer getting power from the Sun, it relied on its own batteries for the first time since launch in October 2018. “Its always nerve-wracking to know a spacecraft’s solar panels are not bathed in sunlight. When we saw the solar cells restarted generating electrical current, we knew BepiColombo was finally out of Earth’s shadow and ready to proceed on its interplanetary journey” #BepiColombopic.twitter.com/xWqMXeJ5u0

After 34 minutes in darkness, the Sun reappeared for #BepiColombo, and solar power again came flooding in. At this point, #MissionControl declared a #FlybySuccesspic.twitter.com/5YlMkehQT3

The operation was performed with a limited flight control team at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. But engineers still managed to monitor the #BepiColomboEarthFlyby, maintain social distancing and get a selfie!pic.twitter.com/yaxJbZZzHn

Scientists will use data gathered by #BepiColombo during the flyby, including images of the Moon and measurements of Earth’s magnetic field, to calibrate the instruments that will, as of 2026, investigate Mercury to solve the mystery of how the scorched planet formedpic.twitter.com/N30NZxgqPD
