Perhaps @stripe founders should take a class on coastal geomorphology? Or climatology?

I don’t even get how olivine is supposed to help, but who the hell thinks the ocean needs to absorb more carbon?!?!

olivine dissolution releases alkalinity, which de-acidifies the ocean and converts co2 in the ocean into bicarbonate, which then allows more co2 to move from the atmosphere to the ocean. it would obviously good for us if the ocean were able to take up more carbon

The blog post might help put it in context: https://stripe.com/blog/first-negative-emissions-purchases …. Most importantly, we're funding a safety study, not a deployment at any scale.

I get the idea, but wow, there are a lot of things that could be bad ecosystem-wise and geomorphological for this. Olivine sand and carbonate sands are wildly different.

we could balance present day fossil fuel emissions w/ this method if we mined enough olivine to approximately double the total volume of mining occurring on Earth. perhaps that's shooting too high, but even a tenth that level would be a really huge deal
