But NZ and Oz are still part of the commonwealth, right? I just watched a miniseries called ANZAC girls about the nurses in WW1 and they talk about the whole 25 April thing being the catalyst for independence. Really interesting.

It is interesting because there are a lot of myths about Gallipoli. Many Pakeha in the 40s and 50s still referred to Britain as 'home', despite the belief that Gallipoli sparked the emergence of a 'kiwi' identity. I think that WWII was probably a bigger shift away from Britain.

Huh, that's really interesting. Just shows, history books are full of discrepancies. I guess you never know the whole story. In SA I basically ignored everything I learned in history because it was all so biased depending on whether it was recorded pre- or post-apartheid.

i can imagine it would be. It's a very interesting and diverse history there for sure and highly politically charged.

Ugh it's the worst and everyone is so racist and full of issues about what happened to their forefathers 50 years ago. I love the mish mash of culture here and it's a beautiful country with some awesome people, but I'm seriously sick of being stereotyped just because I'm white.

i see it as a pendulum. When the pendulum has been very far one way it tends to swing very far the other way before settling into the middle. It's a pattern I see a lot in many different contexts. Which doesn't make it personally easier i know.

For SA it would probably be back in the 1500s and before when the people inhabiting the Cape were the peaceful Strandlopers (beach walkers) and various small peaceful tribes inland, before the Zulu came south killing everyone in their path and the colonists arrived on the coast.

Nobody likes to talk about how bloodthirsty the Zulus were because they're in power in SA now. An example of the victors writing history. But a lot of peaceful tribes were completely wiped out by them. King Shaka was the Ghengis Khan of Southern Africa. 1/2

So whatever color you are, your ancestors were probably pretty nasty. Which is why I wish everyone would just MOVE ON. I'm pretty sure neither I nor my contemporaries are planning world domination, so let's just be friends, ok? And that concludes my ranting for today. How r you?

absolutely, and in my opinion part of that is recognising the impact of the past on the present and making a commitment to fixing the present.

I'm supposed to be adding words to my WIP but I couldn't help getting caught up in this fascinating Twitter convo 😂 It does, however, give me some ideas for crafting a political history for my world 🤔 So not wasted time :) What are you working on?
