as many point out, public librarians are overworked/underpaid/precarious (just like many educators, adjuncts, service workers, gig workers, mechanical turks, & a growing sector of the labor force). in addition, western isolation is a deep rooted cultural problem with no quick fix

but this situation is neither natural nor inevitable! for example, we users produce enormous wealth for tech companies whose *unpaid* taxes *could* help support public libraries, schools, health services & other social infrastructure necessary for flourishing democratic society

paying taxes isn’t just expensive for BigTech, it’s bad business strategy b/c it wld reduce our dependency on digital services designed to extract our data. i'm sure you cld come up w/ other examples of how austerity/privatization has been normalized in service to corporations

the role of the public library today is obviously a complicated question that intersects with a broad range of social issues & requires *above all* input from the amazing librarians/staff that work in them, but also the renewed interest from citizens who might help support them

I'm in Canada in a smallish city of 185000 and we believe in paying taxes for the public good. public libraries are open till 9 every night but Sunday and Saturday. full of books, computers, lounge chairs and newer ones have coffee and 3D printers

Many US libraries are open late and offer similar services.
