what if public libraries were open late every night and we could engage in public life there instead of having to choose between drinking at the bar and domestic isolation

It's hard for retail/customer service workers to socialize, even with coworkers, for example, because of erratic schedules/late hours. Less individualism than inability to synchronize. Do we really need to be able to buy a new shirt or a box of chicken at 9pm? Or later?

Baked in, is exactly the problem. It may seem we've always been this way to most, as most grew up post-WW2, during our great suburban expansion experiment and addiction to automobiles. But really, it was different before that.

Agreed, our library stays open 24 hrs 6 days a week. Only closes Sunday night. We all go there every now and then at night, to avoid people.
