what if public libraries were open late every night and we could engage in public life there instead of having to choose between drinking at the bar and domestic isolation

I made insensitive tweets abt public libraries & the individuals that staff them. I apologize for those tweets. I have much to learn abt the difficult challenges public librarians face, the services they provide, & how much they strive to meet the needs of communities they serve

I know some had/have a bar, but I wonder if (and how) the decline of social fraternal clubs (Elks Club, VFW, Moose Lodge, etc.) plays a role in this.
-
i think you’re right — there’s been an overall erosion of public space, which has made technology’s offer of so-called connection almost impossible to resist

It would be great if there were community spaces with classes open to people age 20-something through 50's. That demographic once they leave school and before they retire, there is no programming. It's assumed we're working, taking care of family, nothing more.
-
If this was paired with evening childcare, so grownups could attend community classes on drop-in basis (Maker classes, tech, book clubs, cooking, art, etc.) it would be a great alternative to just Netflix or bar-hopping. Healthier socialization too.

(Assuming I had any choice for my evenings other than childcare) I feel like I would need a wider menu of library activities.

it'd have to be profitable to sustain itself, and i don't think there's a market demand enough right now to do so. i guess since it's public it can operate at a loss, but i don't like the existence of entities that operate at a loss.

“It’d have to be profitable to sustain itself?!” “I don’t like the existence of entities that operate at a loss?!” Dude, libraries may not make a *financial* profit, but they certainly enrich communities through giving them access to knowledge.
