Aspiring founders sometimes think they’ll learn more joining a startup first(mentorship, success models, expertise etc) Maybe! But they underestimate that, as a founder, you can also get great mentors, founder peers, expertise—& skin in the game is a hell of a learning motivator

"You'll learn more being an employee first" is a solid pitch to convince someone to join your startup instead of starting their own.

Totally. The question to ask is why joining would be a better learning accelerant than starting. Good answers are: you’ll meet your cofounder, you’ll work with the best people you’ll ever meet, you’ll make a lot of money, and they’ll invest in your startup

Joining a startup w/ good, transparent leadership while having a “founder’s mentality” helped me develop expertise, confidence, and a sense of what matters. This experience taught me I wanted to be a founder, which I didn’t know when I started. Might be the right path for some.

I was in this boat. Left a cushy job to be a founder. Mentors/peers helped. I wish I had I had spent at least a year in a funded startup to learn: - Hiring - Operating in resource constrained environment - Execution speed - Fundraising - Operations I could have done it faster

Absolutely one hell of a learning motivator! Saying this as a failed first time entrepreneur. Don’t think I would have learnt it any other way-especially with the breadth of problems that need to be addressed is crazy. Had a supportive wife though 😊!

The (perceived) risk is different. Learning is an important criteria, but it's not the only one. Not even the first one for a lot of people.
