Sam Harris thinks (to generalize) that people do bad things due to ignorance. Fundamentalists & extremists of all stripes, for example, are just doing bad science. If only they knew the "truth", Sam implies — i.e western science — they’d think just like western liberals.

They’re wrong because of bad science, not b/c of different values independent of science. In other words, Sam is a firm believer in mistake theory. But there are societies that aren’t buying it (western science). They see and want the wealth, but they still don’t buy it...

Conflict theory argument: what people care about is what their biological drives have them care about; and those biological drives have evolved over millions of years: Survival and reproduction. If truth gets in the way of evolutionary fitness, it’s not helpful.

After all, we’ve had scientific method for centuries, and a people still believe in non-science (e.g astrology). Perhaps evolutionary fitness is more expansive than just scientific truth.

Evolutionary fitness means social status. And status isn’t necessarily a zero sum game, but at times it can be A society that clearly outlined this truth -- that mostly high status people advance their genes -- wouldn't be very cooperative society. So we hide that to get along

We see this in, say, politics. People are largely interested in truth to the extent it raises their social status / confirms something they already believed. This explains the saying “it has the benefit of being true”- a nod to the fact that truth is often a supporting detail

Which brings us back to conflict theory: Conflict theory states that people disagree because their interests conflict, the conflict in question is actually zero-sum so there’s no reason to agree, the only question is how to resolve the conflict.

My take? Usually, getting ppl on same page (truth) helps bring people closer together, esp in micro interactions. (mistake theory) Sometimes, it doesn't--you fundamentally want diff things. And maybe it's worth latching onto a narrative that will help ppl get along (conflict)

We're increasingly moving from scarcity to abundance. Hopefully the evolutionary fitness / status game will become even less zero sum over time, and mistake theory will be increasingly the correct lens to applyhttps://twitter.com/eriktorenberg/status/1139982925582065664?s=20 …
