People call tech companies monopolies (e.g. MSFT, FB), but their reigns usually end every few decades. The top universities have remained the same for *centuries* without new entrants posing much of a threat. What structural/systemic barriers prevent disruption/new competition?

A majority of the population views university as a necessity, but tech more as a want than a need. Market fragmentation is much higher in tech. Also the time it would take someone to reach a MSFT/FB valuation is significantly shorter than a new university gaining MIT status.

There are great new entrants like Lambda, 42, or UoPeople that serve broad audiences but it's hard to compete when the wealthy and powerful are willing to donate money to Harvard to cement their own influence/opportunity

The only barrier now is residual inertia. But before, there were mostly two ways to make money: A) high-earning profession, or B) own a business. (A) is illegal for non-universities to provide (MD’s, JD’s, etc.), and (B) had been relatively closed to people without degrees.

As for why (B) had been closed, my best guess is that to the extent starting a business required getting capital ($$$ or social) from others, it was hard to prove your capital-worthiness. So proxies like degrees were important. Now you just launch and let the market prove it.
