It may be more effective to spend more time with a fewer amount of people, and have them fully trust & respect & like you. This is the idea of "being famous to your friends".https://twitter.com/lpolovets/status/1009456595686907904 …

I'm still in the early stages of building a reputation, but here's an algorithm that (I think) is working: 1. Meet lots of people. 2. Be helpful to as many of them as possible. 3. Don't screw anyone over. 4. Play the long game & don't be transactional. 5. Repeat #1-#4. Forever. https://twitter.com/twentyminutevc/status/1008929882171113477 …

There is actually a good theoretical framework for this: Structural Holes Theory. The key principles are: A) Build a dense network within your own cluster B) Build strong connections to singular nodes in clusters as far from your own as you can find

I think people's opinions on this probably reflect their personal experiences, but I've found a lot of value in both a very broad network and a few very close connections.

i doubt any of the greats view building a reputation as the goal. That’s like living to give a TED talk, not living to do something worthy of being invited to give a TED talk

it’s possible to impact many other people’s lives *scalably* (ex: writing, speaking, coding, research, music, art, etc), yet still spend time emphasizing a few strong close & personal 1:1 relationships. (easy to forget about that second part sometimes)

alternate theory: help people in your network with intros — and more — not with your own reputation or fame (local or not) as the goal, but because when anyone in your circle of trust/work family wins, you all win cc: @lpolovets

One of the lowest-effort benefits you can provide to someone is connecting them to someone else. Know a lot of people -> able to help them by connecting -> social value goes up without a lot of effort
