Calls for scholars to use a term other than “Anglo-Saxon” aren’t “bans”or attempts to “outlaw” words or “erase history.” They’re calls for scholars to not use racist terms. There are many sexist/homophobic/racist terms scholara stopped using bc they caused harm. #medievaltwitter

The word “Aryan” was largely retired in scholarship after WWII bc of the term’s racist history and attraction to white supremacists. There’s dozens of examples like this, and no history was eradicated or Orwellian nightmare enacted bc scholars choose to avoid harmful words.

Claiming scholars of color like Dr. Mary Rambaran-Olm are destroying history or language is a racist dogwhistle & is white projection. White ppl stamped out the languages & history of POC for centuries. Look at US gov policy of eradicating indigenous ppl’s culture & language.

Tl;dr: asking for a racist term not to be used isn’t banning or erasure or “giving in to the white supremacists.” It’s asking for people to use less harmful language. It’s striking how radical a lot of other white people find that concept. #MedievalTwitter

Spot on. There are 50+ books on my shelf with A-S in the title. Many works in preparation use it. The textbooks I use include it, although publishers are changing that going forward. Many of us are simply phasing out A-S and contextualizing its use in works we cite.

Here is a very balanced analysis of the matter, discussing the different implications of the term in the US and in the UK: https://www.historyextra.com/period/anglo-saxon/professor-michael-wood-anglo-saxon-name-debate-is-term-racist/ …

Thank you for pointing us to this article! I've been trying to stop using 'Anglo-Saxon' (honestly didn't realize it was racist until now, I thought it was an academic term), but didn't understand what the issue was. Now I grasp enough of it to at least basically see the problem.

So what what term, then? Why allow others to commandeer a term and use it for the wrong purposes? Especially when the people at that time referee to their polity as such...
