THREAD. So, surprise surprise, the senior white scholars who've been punching down publicly at scholars of color have attracted the attention--and praise--of white supremacist trolls. Who are hailing them as sane, reasonable authorities on their side. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/yHuvgLpl2X

They're also all talking to each other. The above screenshot shows one white supremacist's comments on a post by this vlogger who claims his medieval history background and genetics knowledge allow him to make claims about the "Anglo-Saxon" race in the UK. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/RriYdNV3Iw

These white supremacists are looking for signs that they're backed by academics, and have latched onto posts by senior white medievalists as academic authorization of their views. They receive little or no pushback from these scholars. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/Pmvtf6Mnaj

But these trolls have white supremacist views that they express under the guise of an interest in science, history, and "their heritage." SurvivetheJive's posts include genetics claims about the "Anglo-Saxon" race, phrenology, and weaponized medieval history. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/7oHoowtuKs

He also deploys alt-right terminology, flirts with neo-Nazi terms, and suggests that the Indo-European "race" replaced the "swarthy" previous inhabitants of European. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/HYPElM9U25

He also follows and RTs many medievalists, did postgrad work in medieval studies, & weaponizes academic medieval studies for his agenda. We might consider how he could have gone through academic medieval studies and either not be challenged or been emboldened in his views.pic.twitter.com/F8P39SNJT3

He attacked me a few months ago bc I joked about Fancy Vikings in Turkey. I got flooded w/homophobic, anti-semitic, racist slurs, and "jokes" about genocide. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/pM4i57Sova

The comments under this post include racist slurs (such as the N-word) and neo-Nazi terminology. They also include defenses and invocations of white medievalist scholars who've argued with scholars of color, and who've defended the use of "Anglo-Saxon." #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/QALoallUJm

They repeat these medievalists' language about "a small radical cohort of scholars" (POC) who have "few publications," attacking "standout scholars" (white) who have made "important contributions." They also talk about (POC) invaders into "traditional" spaces. #MedievalTwitter

As scholars of color have been saying, white supremacists are LISTENING to medieval studies, & are EMBOLDENED by seeing medievalists arguing to retain racist terms and disparaging scholars of color. They comment support without pushback. This is a problem! #MedievalTwitter

Yesterday, 2 European scholars argued with scholars of color about whether the term "Anglo-Saxon" is really *that* racist in the UK. Trolls appeared to attack ECRs & scholars of color for advocating that the term be removed. The white scholars did nothing. #MedievalTwitter

This particular group is European, UK-based, and caught up in right-wing English nationalism, pro-Brexit politics. They're also very invested in "Anglo-Saxon" as a term. THAT SHOULD TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE POLITICS OF THE TERM IN THE UK. #MedievalTwitter

Tl;dr: (often UK/European) white supremacists are watching recent debates between medievalists & citing medievalists who disparage medievalists of color or who advocate for retaining the term "Anglo-Saxon." When you do this, you give fuel to white supremacists. #MedievalTwitter
