Thread: Snr academic says he called grad students (incl. POC) “twats” to let them know that ppl will end their careers bc they (::checks notes::) ...tweeted support for antiracism. This is apparently good bc other snr academics would just quietly deny them jobs. #MedievalTwitterpic.twitter.com/9CoKdytJp1

He also claims nobody objected to the idea that this racism also occurs in the European when—in fact—he called grad students “twats” for saying exactly that.pic.twitter.com/9pTfov84H6

Yet very few other senior white academics have chosen to speak about this. I’m not going to tag any. I’m tired of asking other white people to do the bare minimum, and of getting long DMs about how they don’t have time/power to speak up.

This sort of bullying and targeting of POC doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens bc other (white) academics allow it. His partner remains on the ISXX board drafting their harassment policy. Bc few ppl speak up, he can paint Dr. MRO & her supporters as a tiny radical “cohort.”

Bc only a few ECRs—most of them grad students and POC—tweet about antiracism in medieval studies, he and the other gatekeepers (who he openly identifies as a silent part of the profession) can continue to end the careers of the ECRs tweeting about antiracism and bullying.

To the other ECRs standing up to senior academics despite the risks, you are my heroes. To the grad students doing so, including so many grad students of color, you are the future of this profession. The only future I’m willing to imagine. 💜💜💜pic.twitter.com/YvnyHfYc9C

To Dr. Rambaran-Olm, who has spent this year quietly helping ECRs behind the scenes with endless revisions (including of an entire diss), advice, support, and care packages: you are our hero. I would tag you, but I know you don’t like drama. @ISASaxonists Oops, my finger slippedpic.twitter.com/Ww5yBVUfBE

Stupid question sorry, but is a senior academic a faculty lecturer/researcher, or an academic advisor title? Horrific either way.

Senior academic refers to people with tenure and positions at institutions who have been around awhile. Not really an official position.
