In 2022, South Carolina's GOP-dominated legislature pushed through a redistricting plan that took a competitive district and made it solidly Republican. They got a surprising boost from one of the country's biggest Democrats: Rep. James Clyburn. (THREAD)

STATEMENT OF MARK PAOLETTA, FRIEND OF JUSTICE THOMAS The Thomases have rarely spoken publicly about the remarkably generous efforts to help a child in need. They have always respected the privacy of this young man and his family. It is disappointing and painful, but unsurprising… Show more

Thomas didn't respond to our detailed Qs about the latest payments. Crow did. His office told us... “Harlan Crow has long been passionate about the importance of quality education and giving back to those less fortunate, especially at-risk youth."

Good thread on great SCOTUS reporting... p.s. if you're a journo and someone tells you, "this isn't news, this is just how things work" -- that's a STRONG SIGN it's a story.

One way to understand some of the recent Supreme Court reporting is that the justices live in the very small, very rarified world of elite legal circles, which reporters are now newly interested in covering

NEW: Justice Clarence Thomas said he was advised he didn’t have to disclose trips and gifts from billionaire Harlan Crow because Crow, a close friend, “did not have business before the court.” But in at least one case to reach the justices, Crow did.

Terrible day. helped free people from prison, changed laws, got sexual harassers fired, and more. As it did so, it won a Pulitzer, Pulitzer finalist honors 3 times, 3 Polk Awards, a National Magazine Award, etc. Happy to help editors find great journalists.

A key thing to understand about the story on Clarence Thomas' undisclosed real estate deal: Thomas made MANY other disclosures that year—teaching fees, travel reimbursement, a $530 stained glass medallion—but not the property sale to Crow. propublica.org/article/claren
Page from Clarence Thomas' 2014 Financial Disclosure Report. Under "Non-Investment Income" he lists teaching income from Notre Dame Law ($7500), George Washington U. ($10K), Univ. Georgia Law ($9455)
Under "Spouse's Non-Investment Income" it lists unspecified salaries from The Daily Caller and Liberty Consulting Inc.
Under "Reimbursements" it lists multiple instances where schools (Notre Dame; Palm Beach Atlantic; Vanderbilt; U. Texas at Tyler; Georgia) reimbursed him unlisted amounts for transportation, meals and accommodation.
Section of Clarence Thomas' 2014 Financial Disclosure Form.
Under "Gifts" is a single item: A Yale Law School Award of merit described as "Stained glass medallion resting in an oak base with a brass plaque" and valued at $530.

Astonishing. As wrote, the Chief Justice must investigate how such conduct could take place at the Court under his watch. And if the Court does not fix these clear abuses, Congress must.
