We are actually heading to to absolute solar minimum! 2020 will be the year with the lowest solar activity. That is why some scientists believe 2026 will already have a 2°C warming. Because we are heading to the solar maximum in 2026.

Whether we are at solar minimum or solar maximum has nothing, zero, zilch, nada to do this. The impact of the solar change you are talking about, in miniscule.

all this data shows me is an increase in the average insolation between 1940 and 1960. and a rise in temperature after that. need more data explaning the relationship! or maybe 140 yrs is not enough data
-
The science is not based simply on that graph for Heaven's sake! That's just a simplified illustration. We also have far more than 140 years -- we have about 400 years of sunspot data, and thousands of years of cosmogenic isotope data (which records solar variability).

Pretty sure those who ask are not actually listening to your answer.
-
Well, it was a family friend, and they did listen. Not everyone who is ignorant wants to remain ignorant.

Was there a relationship between the two until about 1950?
-
It's not that there's no relationship. The sun absolutely controls some decadal variability and is the main control knob on long time scales (>10,000 yrs). But people freq try to absolve humanity of responsibility for global warming by invoking the sun, and that's just false

Groan! However, I have a textbook for a grad level enviro class that says the opposite. And they use that to argue for the validity of the Gaia hypothesis... It's pretty fucking wild.

Which textbook is that?
