Why don't all the Democrats and, say, 30 Republicans agree to vote for one of the 30 Republicans (or a 31st Republican)? It must be a dumb idea. I don't know what I don't know. But can someone please explain? #Speakerofthehousevote

To the remaining sane Republicans who still exist: Read Burke! "When bad men combine, the good must associate, else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

So 20 extremists hold up McCarthy, who's already committed to many irresponsible things, and blackmail him to be even more irresponsible. But there aren't five sane Republican members who are willing to say, we're not sticking with a speaker candidate who signs on to those terms?

A procedural question…can members of Congress vote if they haven’t been sworn in?

216-214, the GOP motion to adjourn passes by one vote. Four Republicans join Democrats to vote against it. Applause in the chamber as the House completes its first successful vote of 2023: To go home without electing a Speaker.

Another coup for Ginni Thomas, this one clownish and harmless:

📌BREAKING: More than two dozen right-wing figures released an open letter today urging more Republicans to oppose McCarthy. Among them are GINNI THOMAS, the wife of the Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, who helped lead efforts to overthrow our government.

I can see why Republicans might be embarrassed by the prolonged Speaker contest. But I don't get the suggestion that this is embarrassing for the United States "in the eyes of the world." I mean, this is democracy. Not the Supreme Soviet. There is not a rubber stamp. You know?

flagging this clip for people who seem to be forgetting that McCarthy is an election denier who has accommodated extremists in his party at every turn 👇

.@GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy was laying the groundwork for the attack on the Capitol for months. 11/5/2020: “President Trump won this election, so everyone who’s listening, do not be quiet. We cannot allow this to happen before our very eyes... join together and let’s stop this.”

The odds that Romanian government officials didn't know exactly where this Andrew Tate guy lived the whole time are zero. I wonder why they arrested him now. I imagine he just became an embarrassment.

Eric’s assignment desk: Who in the hell is in charge of the House right now, and under what law? What would happen if Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are unable to serve as president? Who is Speaker today? Or does the Speaker get skipped? IS AL HAIG IN CHARGE??

Hearing lots of GOP complaining about the Freedom Caucus "hostage taking". But let's remember that this is exactly what happens each time we have a govt shutdown or deb ceiling hostage situation. This is all the Freedom Caucus has ever done.

This is reportedly the text of a new Louisiana law limiting certain internet access. The writer CLEARLY knows his way around porn. “Touching, caressing or fondling of nipples.” Did you write this yourself, ⁦⁩? It’s Penthouse Forum-worthy.

There is going to be a lot of this over the next two years. It lists a lot of reasons why I don’t want Ron DeSantis to be president. But I’m a democrat. Of course I disagree with him about all this shit. Trump is like a deranged mentally ill lunatic

“I was emotional so I planned a coup,” the wife of a sitting U.S. Supreme Court justice said.

I really regret that my text messages, from the spouse of a Supreme Court Justice to the President’s Chief of Staff, urging that our political opponents be sent to Gitmo and put on military trial became public. Does no one respect privacy anymore? 🤔

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will end in one of two ways. Russia conquers Ukraine. Or Ukraine pushes Russia out. That’s why the U.S. and NATO need to give the Ukrainians everything they need to win. Ukrainians have shown they will fight to the death. The only off ramp is to win.

For 85% of Ukrainians, no territorial concessions are acceptable, according to recent survey. Only 8% believe that it is possible to give up some territories to achieve peace and preserve independence.
